“BJJ has kept me sane through a lot of life’s madness, kept me focused on my health and well-being and helped me through two pregnancies. I’ve met some of my favourite people on the mats and Jiu Jitsu is something I can’t imagine my life without now, I pushed past my initial fears and I’m so glad I did!”

I kind of fell into Jiu Jitsu, my partner used to train a little, so I tried a private lesson back in 2015. I was so nervous beforehand, I had no idea what to expect having never done anything like it. My private lesson was with the Pro MMA fighter James Webb and he was super chilled & very friendly. James showed me a few basic techniques, we drilled and did a couple of rounds of sparring. It was fascinating and after a couple months I felt comfortable enough to brave a class.

My first proper class was in Colchester under my head Coach Alain Pozo.  Even though I was now at least familiar with Jiu Jitsu, my nerves were still through the roof!  I remember walking in and thinking what am I doing here?! There was not another woman in the room, and I was far from my comfort zone.  I felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb. That is until the warm up started; from then on I was so engrossed (and confused) by what my coach was teaching, that an hour and a half went by just like that!

I kept going back and admittedly I used to get butterflies on my way to every single class. I felt so nervous for a while. I hated pairing up for sparring in case I was the last one left, and  to begin with it’s a little odd to be in such close contact with some guy you just met…but the feeling I got at the end of sparring was like nothing else. I was sold.

Of course I believe there is no other sport better than BJJ, I invest a lot of time into something that right now is just a hobby for me. It’s kept me sane through a lot of life’s madness, kept me focused on my health and well-being and helped me through two pregnancies.
